Who We Are

Improving life across the haor region

Alokito Haor Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people in the haor region of Bangladesh, especially in Austagram, Kishoreganj. We work across agriculture, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. With a vision of building a self-reliant and enlightened community, we support sustainable development through community-based initiatives and awareness programmes rather than one-off charity.

Why We Build

A region that floods for half the year

The haor is a vast, bowl-shaped floodplain that fills with water for roughly half the year, turning fields into open water and villages into islands reachable only by boat. Seasonal flooding disrupts livelihoods, damages homes and limits access to essential services. A family’s access to a doctor, a marketplace or a school can depend entirely on whether a boat is available and the water is safe to cross.

Around 19 million people rely on this ecosystem as farmers, fishers, boat operators and traders. Despite its rich natural resources and biodiversity, the region experiences high poverty, and gains made in a good year can be wiped out by a single severe flood season. Alokito Haor Foundation exists to meet that need directly, not as a one-time relief effort but as a long-term, locally rooted institution built to outlast any flood season.
